VINTAGE SKIN CARE

Written By Samantha Dym, Contributing Author.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Roaring Twenties” time period novel, The Great Gatsby, is coming to life on the big screen, again. Only this time… it will feature the handsome Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the mysterious Jay Gatsby, previously played by Robert Redford in 1974, and silent film star Warner Baxter in 1926. Carey Mulligan plays the role of Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby’s lover. This film will display women draped in feathers, loose dresses, and beads, among other things. These were all popular accents to wear during the “Roaring Twenties”… but how did women care for their skin back then? Well, the popular thing to do with your skin was to keep it porcelain-like. Unfortunately, skin lightening with bleach was the trend back in the 1920s. It ruined the quality of women’s skin over time, as many suffered burns, scarring, and sores from this unhealthy regiment.

In 1929, Marie Barlow developed her own skin care line in NYC. It included corrective treatments and cold creams, which she recommended should be applied to the face for about ten minutes each day. Unfortunately, many skin care and cosmetic products produced during the 1920s contained some very toxic materials but no one knew it. In fact, we found an advertisement from the time period claiming that “YOU can be Youthful” by using Marie Barlow’s products. But, how did women know? There were no ingredients on the labels or scientific evidence that these could produce positive results. Women couldn’t possibly know what they were putting on their faces. Nowadays… there are so many different types of skin care products claiming to clear acne, keep you looking young, and prevent dry skin. Some are still made with harsh chemicals that can damage your skin.
